Wu Xia Bing

From the name of the stall, if you understand some chinese you can probably guess what it is selling. It is a ngo hiang stall selling about 15 varieties of ngo hiang including its own specially made prawn fritter. The prawn fritter is the highlight to me as it very fresh and nice. It is made as you order so you imagine the freshness. The one thing about ngo hiang stall is that the chilly sauce and sweet sauce that comes with it must be very good or else it is not shiok. I have not tried the sweet sauce but I like the chilly very much. By the way, they also sell beehoon which goes with the ngo hiang. The stall sell set with beehoon from $3.00 to $3.50.

AL.Hanifa Muslim Food

As I'm writing this article, I am eating the gado-gado from this stall for lunch. Yummy! Yummy! The sauce is really good and "peanuty". The stall also sells roti john with a very tasty red sauce, mee rebus (yet to try), mee siam (yet to try), mee soto (yet to try) and tau hoo goreng. So far the ones I have tried are very nice. As mentioned, I have yet to try the rest.

Don & Set Japanese Food

On workdays, whenever I feel like having Japanese food for lunch, I will head off to Golden Shoe Food Centre to fill my craving.

The queue everyday is very long, which is a reflection of the very good pricing and delicious food. The dish prices range from $3.50 to $7.50.

I have tried the following dishes : chicken don, Japanese pork cutlets curry set (which is my favourite), vegetable curry with udon, tempura set, tempura udon, terrayaki chicken set (the chicken are quite different from normal terrayaki chicken as the chicken are deep fried and coated with the stall's unique sauce), ugnagi set and vegetable curry udon. All the set meals come with rice, salad and miso soup. The miso soup is really delicious.

AHYAT Hunan Restaurant

On my maid's birthday we were wondering where we could celebrate with her. Out of the blue, my daughter suggests the eateries at Turf City. The last time we were there was 4 years ago.

When we reached there, I was very pleased to see a branch of AHYAT Hunan Restaurant there. My first lunch experience at AHYAT was when it first opened its first branch at Singapura Building. My experience then was pleasant. I still remember it served very good fried chicken with salt and pepper. So we decided to give it a try again.

The environment is very pleasant and the food were very good. We ordered fried asparagus and scallop with XO sauce which was very well done, fried chicken with salt and pepper which was very good as it was done just right with the meat very tender and skin very crispy, kangkong belanchan ( my daughter's favourite - she said it was very good), pan-fried beancurd & egg with spicy sauce which my maid loves, pan-fried dumpling vegetable which was delicious as well, and special fried rice wrapped in Lotus leaf which is okay (I think they served us 5 portions as there were 5 of us and it was huge.

We are relatively small eaters so there were a lot of leftovers which we takeaway. If I had known I would have ordered 2 portions which will be just right. As usual, we ordered desserts even though we are all very full. We ordered a potion of mango pudding and red bean. I thought the desserts were below average.

When the bill came, I found that they charged for the towel, pickle and - believe it or not - plain water as well ($1.00 per glass). The bill came up to $142.42 inclusive of a pot of homemade chrysanthemum tea, two Cokes and a Sprite. Next time I go I'll make sure I do not ask for any water.

Adam Road Hawker Centre

The name speaks for itself in terms of where Adam Road Hawker Centre is.
This is one of those hawker centres that keeps its environment clean, which is why they have me as a customer. I try my best not to patronise dirty hawker centres that do not up keep their place even if their food is good. I find that cleanliness is the most important aspect of how a hawker centre must maintain to ensure that they can attract the majority of people. Of course the food must be good as well. I also make sure that the specific hawkers that I purchase my food from are clean by examining their stalls first before I order. Most of their stalls there are Malay and Indian with a few Chinese ones. I will be featuring some of my favourite stalls in other articles.

Nasi Singapura - Stall No.3, Adam Road Hawker Centre

I love Malay food and I found that the dishes from this particular stall are of very good standard. I have tried most of their dishes and like them very much. The dishes I have tried are eggplant with chillies, beef rendang, curried chicken liver (my favourite), fried fish, ikan bilis with peanuts, potato cutlets and sotong. There are other dishes which I have wanted to try but as yet have not. I do not know why each time I am there, I always end up with roughly the same dishes. I suppose the reason might be because I do not eat at the stall everyday so by the time I go back I miss the same dishes so I ended up ordering them again. Today I bought 2 pieces of beef rendang, eggplant with chillies, curried chicken liver and ikan bilies with peanuts, without rice - the lot cost me $9.00. For your information, I am very particular where food is concerned because I do not like to eat the same types of food in a short space of time. I like to "rotate" my food as I believe that different food offers different types of nutrition. I apply this to my drinking and eating of fruits as well. I will feature my favourite fruit juice stall on my next review.

Adam Nasi Lemak - Stall No.1, Adam Road Hawker Centre

At least once a month, either on Sat or Sun lunch, I need a dose of nasi lemak. The nasi lemak that I like best is Adam Nasi Lemak Stall 1. The rice is very fragrant with the right amount of coconut and the texture and quality is very good. I have tried stalls that use poor quality rice and it put me off as the most important part of this dish is the rice. There are few type of sets with different combinations that you can choose from and the prices vary from $2.00 to $4.00 depending on the selection. The different food items available include archar, curried mutton, egg (fried or omelette), fried chicken wings, fish cake, ikan bilis with peanuts, otak, potato cutlet, sambal prawns and small fried fish. All the different sets come with cucumber and yummy sambal chillies which cannot be missed. By the way, I have tried all the food items and they are all very good. Ah! Must not forget to mention that the queue is very long so you have to be patient if you want to savour the food. You will not regret queueing.

Zaiton Satay - Stall No.7, Adam Road Hawker Centre

I have been eating satays since I was very, very young and it is one of my favourite Malay food. I used to live in a shophouse and next door is a side road stall selling satays and almost every night I will eat 5 sticks until I went overseas to study. Nowadays, in Singapore, each time I crave for satays and its sauce I will go and buy them from Zaiton Satay Stall 7 at Adam Road Hawker Centre. The satays are very well seasoned, soft and the best thing is you can even eat them without the sauce. There are 4 types of satays sold - beef, beef tripe, chicken and mutton. The beef tripe is very delicious and a bonus to me as very few stalls sell them. To me, Zaiton beef tripe is the best. I haven't yet found another stall that sells beef tripe satay of that quality. 5 beef, 5 beef tripes, and 10 chicken satays and 2 ketupat (Malay rice cake) cost me $11.00.

Bee Heong Palace Restaurant - (65)62229074

I have been wanting to try this Teochew restaurant for a while and finally did. Can't count how many times I have walked past it and did not patronise it. Mmm! Mmm! No regrets. The food is really very good. I ordered 6 varieties of food. Starters of duck salad and cold dish (6 varieties), fish maw soup, scallop with spinach, stewed pork leg stuffed with mushroom and chestnut served with steam buns, and ended dinner with yam paste as dessert. The whole meal with 2 lime juice, 2 soft drinks and Chinese tea, cost $98.10. Definitely going back to try other dishes that they have. Looked through the whole menu and know what I want on my next visit.

Red Star Restaurant (65) 65325266, (65) 65325103

Very uniquely located in a HDB building on the whole of 7th floor. As I entered, it reminded me of HongKong dim sum restaurants. Very busy with pushcarts containing lots of dim sum. I had pickled cabbage which was very nicely seasoned, Big Pow which was really huge with delicious stuffing and soft skins, 1/2 a roast chicken which was very well done except for the kolo pok which did not fair as well, very nice chicken feet, delicious siew mai and char siew pau, the char siew cheong fun was okay, jellyfish pig leg was average due to a bit of porky smell or else it could have been quite good, mango pudding, almond jelly with longan, custard with mixed fruits and black herb jelly were okay. With 3 soft drinks and a pot of chinese tea, the bill came up to $76.30. As I was leaving I saw a plate of char hor fun carried by a waitress which looked yummy. Maybe I will go back for dinner and try the other dishes.
